Wine Tasting : Yes in India

One of the surprises that being in Loni threw up was the fact that we were in vineyard country. The fledgling wine industry of the country was dependent on the grapes grown in Nasik district for its wine production. Sure I had eaten a carton full of grapes that came from Ozzar but it never dawned on me that the same grapes made wine too.

Well they do and you can taste that wine at the source before it hits the market. The tasting room at Sula Vineyards will allow you that luxury. Located near Nasik the place is ideal for a day trip. The tour guide did want to take us to the “back side” to show us the winery, but hey we were there for the wine not the English.

The hour long tour runs you through the basic process of white, red and rossa wine making. Then you are taught to see. swirl, smell and sip your wine like a pro. They give you crackers between each wine to revitalize your taste buds. Although after the third wine it all kind of begins to taste the same.

You do get a little happy if you choose to consume all the pegs that get poured into your glass. So you can choose to take a tiny sip and throw away the rest of the glass into a pot. Not that I saw any one in the group doing it. We paid for the wine and we are going to drink it all seemed to be the general consensus.

Other than the wine tasting room they also have a restaurant called Little Italy on campus. Although the fact that it was vegetarian made it impossible for us to sample its fare. I believe they serve the Sula Wines along with the food. The vegetarians who visit and choose to eat there can kindly update us on the quality of the food served.

They have an exclusive bungalow called “Beyond” located at the vineyards. Its got three bedrooms with views of the lake. They also have a lawn and a swimming pool. An in house chef will serve you “organicĀ  vegetables” grown locally. No hope for non veg there as well, although you can hire a kayak and cruise the lake. You will need to make your bookings well in advance.
