Book Review : The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown

I finally finished the book! The feeling is more of relief than pleasure or regret. It was disappointing to say the least. Again you have Robert Langdon trying to solve a set of cryptic clues to avert a problem of national security and to save an old friend. All in the period of 24 hours, just like the last two novels. Again you have a single focused villain and this time he is tattooed from every angle but the head.

The Masons are there in full swing bringing in all the Free Mason Symbols along with them. There are FBI agents who want to arrest him. The pyramid with the pure gold capstone. The esoteric mixing with the daily. All in all its got all the elements of a good Dan Brown book. Unfortunately it is not a good Dan Brown book. The plot is too predictable. There is no freshness in the writing.

We learn nothing new that we were unaware of. Plus you get the feeling that the NYC tourism promotion board has gone to Dan Brown and asked him to include all the monuments that he could in the book. Sort of to cash in on the after the book publicity like Rome and Paris did. It is tedious book to go through. Specially in the end. Last few pages after the villain dies, are actually a test of your patience.

I am very disappointed with the book. Jamshed summed it up really well, he actually read the book this time, when he said I paid good money for this? So don’t buy it. Get it from your library. If they decided against buying it, they made a good decision. Still want to read it? Ask me for it and I’ll mail it to you. You can keep it.

The villains tattoos will probably be the interesting thing in the book! ;) But the rest of the book sounds predictable…. when I first saw it, I said, Not another one!
